Un sport national est la discipline la plus prisée d'une nation. Ce sport n’est pas obligatoirement originaire du pays en question. Un tel label connait évidemment des variations dans le temps. Ainsi, en France, le sport national est le jeu de paume du Moyen-Âge à la Révolution. Le sport hippique puis le cyclisme s'imposent au XIXe siècle, mais le football devient sport national dès le premier quart du XXe siècle.
Liste des sports nationaux classés dans l'ordre alphabétique des codes du CIO. Etat des lieux en 2005. Pour illustration, le football américain est préféré au baseball (national pastime) en raison de la position dominante de la NFL par rapport aux autres ligues majeures. De même, le football est préféré au baseball au Japon, car depuis l’an 2000, le football est clairement devant le baseball.
